Coffee in my butt… Say what?

Updated: Feb 1, 2021

The idea of putting coffee in my rear-end was never something I would have even considered - until I went to the Gerson Institute in Southern California (and when people like Gwyneth Paltrow make sticking coffee in your butt more mainstream, it's a subject that becomes more acceptable to discuss). The Gerson Institute is where I learned about the massive benefits of coffee enemas. I learned how Dr. Max Gerson's therapy helps treat cancer patients: people that have recovered from cancer or other illnesses and people that simply want to remain healthy and stay cancer-free. Coffee enemas are a central component of Gerson Therapy. However, Dr. Gerson did not come up with coffee enemas. They started in WW1.

Quick Coffee Enema History:

During WWI, Germany experienced a shortage of painkillers and morphine, so the nursing staff began to give soldiers water enemas to help with pain and constipation. Meanwhile, the doctors were working around the clock and always had a coffee pot brewing. Since the coffee worked so well for the doctors, and there was still a little coffee left over, the nurses started using the remaining coffee for the enemas. Surprisingly, soldiers began to report some pain relief. Following the war, two Germans, interested in the coffee enema's power, started to do some research. What they found was that coffee enemas increased the production of bile and allowed the body to get rid of toxins, rapidly.

Years later, Dr. Max Gerson, author of A Cancer Therapy, adopted this therapy and added it to his patient's regimens. Dr. Gerson paired the enemas with juices, a high potassium diet, and watched many of his patients recover.

*Science-Based Benefits of Coffee Enemas:

  1. Increased cell energy production;

  2. Enhanced tissue health;

  3. Improved blood circulation;

  4. Better immunity and tissue repair;

  5. Cellular regeneration;

  6. Additionally, coffee enemas can help to relieve pain, nausea, general nervous tension, and depression.

Doctors at the University of Minnesota proved that coffee enemas stimulate an enzyme system in the liver called glutathione S-transferase by 600%-700% above normal activity levels. This enzyme reacts with free radicals (which cause cellular damage) in the bloodstream and makes them inert. These enzymes neutralize substances dissolved in the bile which are then released through the bile from the liver and gallbladder and then become excreted through the intestinal tract. A Gerson patient holds the coffee enema in the colon for 12-15 minutes. During this time, the body's entire blood supply passes through the liver 4-5 times, carrying out poisons picked up from the tissues. So the enema acts as a form of dialysis of the blood across the gut wall.

The purpose of the coffee enema is not to clear out the intestines, but the quart of water in the enema stimulates peristalsis in the gut. A portion of the water also dilutes the bile and increases the bile flow, thereby flushing toxic bile (loaded with toxins by the glutathione S-transferase enzyme system) out of the intestines.

Do you still think coffee enemas sound so weird? I met a recovered cancer patient that went through the Gerson Therapy. She had cancer five years prior to our conversation. Initially she treated the cancer with traditional chemo and radiation. She believed that her new cancer was caused by her previous cancer treatments. She found it interesting that her friends supported her doing the "typical" cancer treatments with radiation and chemotherapy, but the moment she shared that this time around she would be sticking coffee in her rear-end and juicing to fight the cancer they were all shocked questioning her choices and her sanity! The lady felt that putting herself through constant vomiting, diarrhea, hair loss, and the many unpleasant side effects that she had been through in the past was crazy. She didn't want to go through that again. She said, "What blew my mind was the fact that sticking poison in my body was more acceptable than doing coffee enemas." This lady was very funny and sweet. She was in her 70's and full of energy. At the time I met her, she had been cancer-free for about ten years.

I also met a 24-year-old male who had stage four cancer and was given six months to live. His family was very open to alternative treatments. He decided to do the Gerson therapy, along with IV therapy of a high dose of vitamin C. Within two years he shrunk his tumors down, they disappeared, and he healed himself.

There are many ways of dealing with illnesses, especially cancer. Western medicine and Eastern medicine, when married together, can have compound healing effects on our bodies.

So are you ready to get started? There are different regimens and protocols for individuals that have had chemotherapy treatments, radiation treatments, people who have diabetes, and other illnesses, but for the average person, trying to remain healthy, this is a good start:

  1. Pick one day a week and do 1-3 enemas that day. Once you do your first one, you will realize it is not that bad. Start on a day that you can stay home, until you know how your body responds. If you feel you are very toxic, take 2-3 days, and shoot for three enemas a day. Also, remember you may feel unwell in the beginning, because your body is releasing the toxins. Trust me; it gets better! If you are a cancer patient or have had cancer with traditional treatment in the past, please email me before you start. The protocol for you is different from the average cancer-free person. Alternatively, you can get Dr. Gerson's book, referenced below.

  2. Drink lots of water and add a green juice or an apple and carrot juice on the day you do your enemas. Usually, the therapy calls for 8oz of juice for every enema. The important thing is to replenish the fluids you lose.

  3. Do some research. Check out videos posted on Youtube.com. Some videos will show you how to prepare the coffee and much more.

  4. Email me if you have questions.

Our Recipe for Enemas:

  1. Get medium roast, whole bean, organic coffee;

  2. Grind the coffee in a coffee grinder;

  3. Use a stainless steel pot and wooden spoon;

  4. Use filtered water;

  5. For every 16-20oz of water you will use 3 tbsp of coffee (This is our concentrated recipe).

  6. Boil the water and coffee for 3 minutes;

  7. Lower heat and let the brew simmer with the lid on for about 10-15 minutes;

  8. After it cools, strain the liquid into a glass jar (mason jars are great);

  9. Use when the liquid has cooled down below body temperature;

  10. Pour the coffee into the enema bag;

  11. Lay on your right side;

  12. Carefully insert enema tube and let it flow into your rectum. Check out Youtube videos for more tips and always consult your doctor before starting any new health routine.

*Common Questions:

Q: If coffee is so beneficial, why not only drink it?

A: Coffee taken orally goes through the stomach, causing digestive problems and affecting the liver by shutting off the bile ducts. It can raise blood pressure and may cause capillary spasms in the extremities. In other words, the gallbladder may shut down when one drinks coffee. Coffee enemas are not given to improve elimination but to stimulate the liver to release toxins.

Q: What Does the Coffee Enema Do?

A: The coffee enema lowers serum toxins.

Q: Is there any scientific research to confirm the methods Dr. Gerson developed in the 1920s, specifically the coffee enema?

A: Three scientists from the Dept of Pathology at the University of Minnesota, showed that rectal coffee administration stimulates an enzyme system (glutathione S-transferase) in the liver increasing the enzyme by 600% to 700%. This can remove toxic free radicals from the bloodstream.

Q: Is there other evidence to support Dr. Gerson's entire Program?

A: In the late 70s, the physicist, mathematician, and biophysicist Freeman Widener Cope, MD wrote: "The high potassium, low sodium diet of the Gerson therapy has been observed experimentally to cure many cases of advanced cancer in man."

Professor Harold Foster, University of Victoria, British Columbia concluded that 'spontaneous regression' (a partial or complete disappearance of a tumor in the absence of orthodox treatment) was far from spontaneous, and was categorized as such, by orthodox medicine, because it was the result of unconventional - alternative and complementary - therapy.

Carmen Wheatley of the Orthomolecular Oncology Group in the U.K. performed studies based on Michael Gearin-Tosh’s experience with multiple melanomas in 1994.

You may be asking why is there not a clinic in the USA? For many years, states had laws stating that it was illegal for any doctor to treat cancer using any method other than chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Recently, a few states have begun to recognize alternative healthcare and begun to allow it with oversight.

In general, acceptance of alternative treatments is slow. Alternative care in some states is allowed only after traditional treatment has failed. It is unlikely that your insurance will cover a procedure like the Gerson Therapy, even though this therapy has been proven to work, and in many cases, better than chemo.

Be open to finding what works for you. You know your body better than anyone. Listen to your body and allow your body to heal itself with proper nutrition, exercise, and a weekly coffee enema!
